Buddhi-128K-Chat

This year, AI Planet achieved a major milestone in advancing large-context capabilities with the release of Buddhi-128K-Chat-7b, one of the first few open-source chat models equipped with a 128K context window. This breakthrough, powered by the innovative YaRN (Yet Another Rope Extension) Technique, enables Buddhi to handle up to 128,000 tokens in context, unlocking new potential for long-document comprehension and agentic setups.

Key Features Introduced

  • 128K Long Context Window:
Extended the Mistral-7B Instruct model’s original 32,768-token capacity to an impressive 128,000 tokens using YaRN and NTK-aware techniques, optimizing dynamic positional embeddings.

  • Enhanced Reasoning Capabilities:
Fine-tuned on Mistral 7B Instruct v0.2, Buddhi excels in tasks requiring advanced memory, recall, and context retention.

  • Diverse and High-Quality Dataset:
The training dataset includes question-answer pairs from Stack Exchange (formatted for chat applications), Alpaca-style conversational datasets leveraging PG19, and examples generated by GPT-3 and GPT-4. This ensures robust performance across varied dialogue scenarios.

  • Optimized Inference:
Incorporated vLLM with Paged Attention to minimize memory usage and enhance throughput during inference, ensuring smoother operations for long-context tasks.

Benchmarks

Short Context Benchmarks:
Buddhi was evaluated using the LM-Evaluation Harness library across widely recognized datasets such as MMLU (5-shot), HellaSwag (10-shot), Arc (25-shot), TruthfulQA (0-shot), and Winogrande (5-shot), matching or outperforming other models in its class.

Long Context Benchmarks:
Preliminary tests on Banking77 (with prompts averaging 2,000 tokens) demonstrate Buddhi’s ability to navigate extended context scenarios. Future benchmarks, including DialogueRE, are in progress to further validate performance.

Technical Innovations

  • Dynamic-YARN Scaling:
Introduced a dynamic ‘s’ scale factor for positional embeddings, ensuring robust performance as sequence lengths change during inference.

  • Inference on Standard Hardware:
Buddhi supports transformers for 128K context lengths, requiring 80GB VRAM (A100 GPU preferred) for full capacity, with quantization options available for smaller GPUs like T4.

  • Open-Source Accessibility:
Hosted on HuggingFace, developers can explore Buddhi’s full potential via HuggingFace Model Card and Colab notebooks that include real-world tasks such as book summarization and long essay generation.

As we reflect on this remarkable achievement, Buddhi-128K-Chat-7b stands as a testament to AI Planet’s commitment to democratizing AI. We look forward to further innovations that will continue pushing the boundaries of what long-context models can accomplish.
